Fox News Coverage on the Milkshake Denial

Fox News Chicago covered the Steak ‘n Shake Denies a Milkshake story:

Deaf Woman Says Steak ‘n Shake Refused to Serve Her

How ironic is it that I can’t access a news story on the web because it isn’t captioned? I dream of the day when it’s all accessible!

Yes, it is ironic, Fox News is no different from Shake a Steak … neither one is providing the deaf people with good service.

Karen, I just read about this on Hetha’s blog.

I am sorry I missed it earlier!

I love the way you handled this.

You are an amazing advocate – level headed, yet firm.

    You go, Girl!

Even though it was not captioned, at least thank you, Karen, for signing so we could get some bits of it.

I agree…you are handling this wonderfully. It has taken me time to actually post a comment of support. My blood is boiling for you and not only to the incident but to some of those that are so negative.

Looking forward to the updates. You have such a wonderful support within the vlog/blog community it’s refreshing to see!

Are you serious. They can really do that. If they can’t sign there is such thing as pen and paper.

There is so much the I take for granted like hearing the link you posted. Hopefully your story will also help other places realize that they can do things, such as the option to select captioning, so that it is more accessible to many.

Thank you for sharing your story with us. I’m sorry you’ve had to go through this. Hopefully your story will help many others.

This isn’t the first time I’ve heard of incidents like this happening and I am happy that you are taking a stand on this issue. I am glad that this is being broadcasted on the news and let’s hope that this is an “eye-opener” to the food service industry that this will NOT be tolerated. This happens at many fast food restaurants with drive through service. There is a need for sensitivity training all across the board. You go, girl!

I couldn’t get the video to work correctly. Forget about captioning — I wish that every web site with videos would provide transcripts alongside. I find video a really annoying and unreliable medium on the web, and don’t get me started about mobile devices! 🙂

As for the situation with the shake place — great job raising awareness about what happened! I think this goes way beyond disabilities and accessibility. Whatever the situation, people need to be more respectful and understanding.
